Soccer in Italy
Forms of soccer had begun in Italy in ancient times when people would play it during the time of the Roman Empire. There were some famous Florentines, such as the Medici family, and even some Popes, such as Clement VII, Leo XI, and Urban VIII, who played soccer in the Vatican. This modern version of football was brought to Italy during the late nineteenth century. Contests and championship tournaments quickly rose up after the official game originated. Nowadays, Italy is considered one of the best national teams in the world, respectively under Brazil, who holds five world cup championships. Italy has won four world cups, and have been very successful in many other tournaments as well. They have won the European Football Championship once and they hold an olympic gold medal. They have ten championships in Europe for ages varying between 16 and 21. There are too many honors to count, and they have been finalists in two World Cups, two European Championships, ten age varying European Championships, two summer Universiades, and four world military championships.
